La Política Criminal, como disciplina, debe ser considerada, desde una perspectiva amplia, como aquel sector del conocimiento que tiene por objeto el estudio del conjunto de medidas, criterios y argumentos que emplean los poderes públicos para prevenir y reaccionar frente al fenómeno criminal. En consecuencia, su centro de conocimiento y su propia aplicación en la praxis no solo es la legislación penal, sino todos aquellos institutos multidisciplinarios que también tengan como fin mediato, desde el ámbito político-judicial, la prevención o la reacción frente a la comisión de hechos ilícitos punibles, en especial, los de mayor envergadura".
